I came home from my final ultrasound to find my belongings packed in garbage bags on the front lawn. My husband stood in the doorway with his newly divorced sister. “She needs the master bedroom more than you do. You can sleep in the basement,” he said coldly. When I tried to push past them into my own home, his sister stuck her foot out. I tumbled backward down the steep porch steps, my heavy belly taking the brunt of the final impact. As the world started fading to black, the last thing I saw was them shutting the front door on me.

“She can’t sing Ave Maria,” Mara murmured, but the microphone picked up every syllable. The ballroom went still. I watched her eyes flare when she understood what had happened, then tighten with fear. For weeks, she had called me plain, untalented, forgettable. Now two hundred people were waiting for me to break beneath the spotlight. I inhaled once, looked directly at her, and said, “Are you sure you want me to start?”

My husband leaned back in his chair and smirked. “Just showing her who the boss of this new family is.” My uncle calmly pulled the hospital curtains shut and took out his hearing aids, placing them on the tray. “Close your eyes, kiddo,” he told me softly. But when my tough father-in-law recognized the faded military tattoo on my uncle’s forearm and started vomiting from absolute fear, I knew my husband had just made his final mistake.
